چکیده

With a growing awareness of the potential hazards of chemical and biological agents in our homes, schools and workplaces, a greater emphasis has been placed on evaluating the role of mycotoxins and mycotoxin-producing fungi in our indoor environments. Now, more then ever, the potential health effects of airborne molds and other biological contaminants are being given serious consideration in IAQ investigations.

Health effects of mycotoxins in indoor air: a critical review.

Industrial hygienists (IHs) are called upon to investigate exposures to mold in indoor environments, both residential and commercial. Because exposure standards for molds or mycotoxins do not exist, it is important for the industrial hygienist to have a broad knowledge of the potential for exposure and health effects associated with mold in the indoor environment. This review focuses on the tox...

Mycotoxins and antifungal drug interactions: implications in the treatment of illnesses due to indoor chronic toxigenic mold exposures.

Chronic exposure to toxigenic molds in water-damaged buildings is an indoor environmental health problem to which escalating health and property insurance costs are raising a statewide concern in recent times. This paper reviews the structural and functional properties of mycotoxins produced by toxigenic molds and their interactive health implications with antifungal drugs. Fundamental bases of...

Molds and other fungi in indoor environments: Summary of biology, known health effects and references

Absidia Absidia is one of the pin molds (zygomycetes) that is frequently found in soil and plant debris (Ellis 1994, Zycha et al. 1969). They produce structures (sporangia) filled with sticky spores under relatively moist conditions. It is also known in indoor environments from air and surface samples. No species are known to produce mycotoxins. A. corymbifera is a well-known agent of zygomycos...

Fungi, Bacteria, Nano-particulates, Mycotoxins and Human Health in Water- Damaged Indoor Environments

Nine types of biocontaminants in damp indoor environments from microbial growth are discussed: (1) indicator molds; (2) Gram negative and positive bacteria; (3) microbial particulates; (4) mycotoxins; (5) volatile organic compounds, both microbial (MVOCs) and non-microbial (VOCs); (6) proteins; (7) galactomannans; (8) 1-3-b-Dglucans (glucans) and (9) lipopolysaccharides LPS (endotoxins). When m...

Evaluation of Mutagenic Potential of Mold Extracts Isolated from Buildings Using the Mouse Lymphoma Thymidine Kinase Gene Mutation Assay (MLA)

In recent years interest in mycotoxin-producing fungi growing in indoor environments has increased. Evidence of mutagenic potential of some molds or their mycotoxins is still equivocal. Much more information is available for single mycotoxins or their metabolites than for complex mixtures composed of different
